Are you in the first generation of your family planning to attend college, or are you a member of an underrepresented group ready to start your college journey? If so, you deserve some major congratulations! As you probably know, a college degree provides valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth. However, financing a degree may seem overwhelming sometimes. Thankfully, as a first-generation or underrepresented college-bound student, there are many wonderful scholarship opportunities available to you. Listed below are links to eighteen national and state-specific scholarships carefully selected for students like you. We recommend you apply for as many scholarships as you are able to, but make sure to check each scholarship’s guidelines for complete eligibility information. For each scholarship, I've provided links to additional information at College Greenlight, a free college and scholarship website for first-generation and underrepresented students and the community-based organizations that support them.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund General College Scholarship                     


This $1,000-$5,000 scholarship is available to Hispanic students with a 3.0 GPA who plan to enroll in a two- or four-year accredited college.

         HSF/Honda Scholarship                     


The HSF Honda Scholarship is intended for Hispanic students interested in a career in the automotive industry. To qualify for this $5,000 award, you must be a junior or senior in a four-year accredited college or university majoring in business, marketing, or engineering.

         CDM Smith/UNCF Scholars Program                     


This scholarship is available to African-American college students majoring in engineering, environmental sciences, geology, or geography. You must have a 3.0 GPA to qualify for this $6,000 scholarship.

Ron Brown Scholar Program                     


The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a $10,000 renewable scholarship awarded to African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must show outstanding leadership, dedication to community service, and academic excellence.

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF)                     


The APIASF grants scholarships to students of Asian heritage who come from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds, or who display dedication to leadership and community service. The amount of these scholarships varies from $2,500-$8,000 and a 2.7 GPA or above is required.

This $20,000 scholarship is available to high school students who are participating in a qualifying college readiness program, and who have a unique story to tell. The Dell Scholars Program is interested in more than academic accomplishments, and stresses that applicants have big dreams for their college years and beyond.

Posse Foundation Scholarship                     


The Posse Foundation is one of the most innovative college access programs in the United States. In order to be considered for candidacy, you must be nominated by your high school or community-based organization. Posse Scholars are given complete scholarships to the school of their choice. The nomination process begins in the fall of a student's senior year.

This $10,000 scholarship is available to first-generation students attending an accredited Arizona high school. To qualify, you must have at least a 3.0 GPA and either an SAT score of 1530 or a composite ACT score of 22.
